Driving Student Success Through Transparency and Fiscal Responsibility
The moral imperative for a school board is that all students can and will learn. This principle must be the driving force behind every decision we make as members of the Baltimore County Board of Education. As I continue my service, I am committed to three primary objectives: making decisions that drive positive student outcomes, improving transparency, and increasing fiscal responsibility.
First and foremost, our students' academic success must guide all policy and resource decisions. Our students cannot be test subjects for unproven practices or curricula. We quite literally cannot afford any new resource that has not already been proven effective in increasing student achievement. Every investment we make must be grounded in evidence-based practices that demonstrate measurable improvements in learning outcomes. When we allocate resources, we must ask ourselves: Will this directly benefit our students' ability to learn and succeed?
Equally important is my commitment to transparency with the entire BCPS community. I will continue to be open and honest in all matters and advocate for our leadership to do the same. Parents need complete access to all their students' schoolwork, both before and after completion. Stakeholders must be able to easily access school information and data, especially data that supports any and all initiatives we undertake as a school system. Transparent communication builds trust, and trust is essential for a thriving educational community. When families and community members have full access to information, they can better support our students and hold us accountable for results.
Finally, I will continue to advocate for full fiscal responsibility in our operating budget. All Baltimore County residents deserve to know and clearly understand how we are spending their tax dollars to improve our public educational system. Critical questions demand answers: Why are we returning millions of dollars every year to the county when every dollar counts toward improving student outcomes? Why do we turn over our purchasing power to the county for healthcare and benefits when, standing alone, we employ nearly double what they do? BCPS needs a clearer and more detailed budget with line items for every expense, from each fund, in all departments. We also need a Budget Committee that aligns with all surrounding large school districts like ours. Financial stewardship is not merely about compliance; it is about ensuring that every available resource is maximized to benefit our students.
These three priorities—student-centered decision-making, transparency, and fiscal responsibility—are interconnected. When we spend wisely and communicate openly, we create an environment where all students can thrive. This is the commitment I make to the families, educators, and taxpayers of Baltimore County.
